My Winter Skin Cleansing Routine

Effective cleansing is the most important part of your skincare routine and every adult needs to cleanse twice a day no matter what their skin type is.

In the morning sweat and dead skin cells need to be removed to avoid pores clogging and to prepare your skin to receive the benefits of your chosen moisturiser. In the evening you must cleanse to remove the dust, dirt and pollution accumulated on your skin during the day and any make-up applied.

Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type is very important and will more than likely vary depending on the season. If your skin feels dry after cleansing it is a sure sign you are using the wrong cleanser or cleansing method for your skin type. Using harsh cleansers can cause dryness and or increased sebum production- yes even oily skin types need gentle cleansing to avoid confusing the skin and causing an increase in sebum production, spots and acne.

Here is a list of my winter cleansing routines followed by descriptions and information on how they can be adjusted to suit different skin types.

Heaven Cleanse facial purifier (plus Geisha Grains 2x per week)

Facial steaming benefits all skin types and you don’t need any expensive equipment or products- a soft washcloth and a basin of warm water is all you need. It opens pores to prepare for face masks and cleansing and can also be used after cleansing to remove dirt and any product residues. Just soak your washcloth in warm, clean water, ring out and lay over face and let the steam work it’s magic- this can be repeated several times until you feel your skin is cleansed.

A DIY natural yogurt and honey mask is my favourite way to start the day. Natural yogurt contains AHA’s that work to exfoliate your skin naturally and zinc that  is an anti-inflammatory. Raw honey moisturizes and has antibacterial properties that help to cleanse the skin. This face mask leaves all skin types smooth, clear and hydrated and helps to plump up fine lines and reduce dark circles and redness. It is important to use natural yogurt and raw honey for this recipe- the quality of ingredients will greatly effect the final result. I like goats yogurt best. Dry skin types should use at least 50% raw honey to yogurt and leave face mask on skin for 1-5 minutes depending on how sensitive your skin is.  Always patch test before using a new skincare product.

I like to start my evening skincare routine with a little of our multi functional Celestial Glow rescue  butter on a damp warm wash cloth to remove make up. Dry and  normal skin types could now use our antioxidant-rich Matcha Detox butter mask to cleanse and hydrate skin. I like to follow this with Heaven Cleanse facial purifier to remove the excess product and further cleanse pores (this is great for all skin types). If your skin is very dry in the winter you may choose to just cleanse with the Matcha Detox butter mask and steam it off with a warm washcloth- this will leave a very thin layer of the product on your skin to offer further hydration.

I always follow my cleansing routine with a floral water based toner (such as Rainbow Lake), a serum (Whisper age reverse serum) and a moisturiser (Grace matcha rejuvenating cream).
